FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Major cleanup work is complete at the site of a tanker crash that dumped about 5,000 gallons of liquid asphalt and 200 gallons of diesel fuel into the Cache la Poudre River.

The tanker crash Thursday was the second in two weeks to spill asphalt into the river.

Both trucks were working for subcontractors on a road-paving project. The drivers were charged with careless driving. Lead contractor LaFarge must demonstrate to state transportation officials that it has a plan to prevent more tanker crashes before asphalt trucks will be allowed back on Colorado 14.

Workers finished removing asphalt from the river Saturday.

Fort Collins officials say water-quality tests so far have shown no dangerous levels of toxins.
