MARQUETTE, Mich. — J.R. Celski outskated childhood hero Apolo Anton Ohno in the 1,000-meter time trial at the U.S. short track speedskating national championships Tuesday night.

“I always looked up to him, and I still do,” Celski said. “I want to do the things he accomplished.”

Celski, 19, finished in 1:23.981, while Ohno, a five-time Olympic medalist, placed second in 1:24.5.

Celski, who defeated Ohno again when they were paired in the four-lap time trial, compiled 1,800 points to lead the standings. Jordan Malone had the fastest time of 37.124, and was second with 1,640 points. Ohno was fourth in 37.24 and was third overall with 1,312 points.

On the women’s side, Katherine Reutter took the top spot in the 1,000 time trial at 1:30.308. Kimberly Derrick, a 2006 Olympian, was second in the 1,000 in 1:31.344.

Roy’s son to go on trial

SAGUENAY, Quebec — A son of former Avalanche goaltender Patrick Roy will stand trial Oct. 7 on charges he assaulted a goalie during a game last year.

Jonathan Roy had been trying to get the case thrown out, but his request was rejected by Quebec court judge Valmont Beaulieu.

Roy, a former goalie with the Quebec Remparts, is accused of beating rival goalie Bobby Nadeau in March 2008 during a game in Quebec’s major junior league. He skated across the ice and rained blows on his opponent.

• Canadian billionaire James Balsillie offered the city of Glendale, Ariz., $50 million to quiet its objections to his bid to buy the Phoenix Coyotes and move the franchise to Hamilton, Ontario. The team is to be sold at auction Thursday.

John Daly has pulled out of his two-tournament trip to Australia because of a recurring rib injury he expects will sideline him for the remainder of the year.

• D.C. United defender Marc Burch is recovering from ankle surgery and is expected to miss two to three weeks.
