University of Colorado-Denver police followed a stolen car about a mile from the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, before it sped off into oncoming traffic and a head-on collision last night.
One passenger is still at large, but the two drivers are in stable condition at University of Colorado Hospital tonight, said university spokeswoman Tonya Ewers.
A second passenger in the stolen vehicle is in critical condition at the hospital, she said.
No names have been released.
The incident started at about 7:30 p.m., when university police picked up the beacon of an anti-theft device inside the sedan on the Anschutz campus.
The maintained a distance from the vehicle and notified Aurora police, as the car pulled into a parking lot near Chambers Road and 23rd Avenue, Ewers said.
The police cruiser was at a stop, when the driver of the stolen car spotted him and raced off, she said.
“Our officer was a ways back,” Ewers said. “He didn’t see the crash, but it’s our understanding he drove into oncoming traffic.”
The University of Colorado-Denver police provide traffic control and other law enforcement services to the Anschutz Medical Campus, which includes The Children’s Hospital and the University of Colorado Hospital.
