BOULDER, Colo.—The teachers’ union in the Boulder Valley School District has given notice of a possible strike following the breakdown of negotiations.

The union filed the notice Monday with the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. Last week, the union rejected the district’s offer of a 1 percent cost-of-living raise on top of regular salary step increases.

Union officials are seeking higher starting salaries for teachers and more rewards for continuing education.

Superintendent Chris King says that would cost the district millions of dollars it can’t afford.

The district sent a request to the union Monday for a third-party fact finder to help find a compromise. The union has opposed the request.
