The 32nd Starz Denver Film Festival (Nov. 12-22) announced today that it will open with one of the most acclaimed independent films of the year, “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.”

The hit has deep local roots. Director Lee Daniels’ film was produced by Denverites Sarah Siegel Magness and Gary Magness and their production company Smokewood Entertainment.

“Lee did everything he wanted to do on this film, because we didn’t inhibit his creative force,” Siegel-Magnuss told The Denver Post right after the drama about a 16-year-old abused child who becomes her own hero against harrowing odds won both the grand jury prize and the audience’s prize at Sundance.

The Magness’ faith and advocacy paid off. Lionsgate picked up the film at Sundance. Oprah Winfrey and Atlanta film mogul Tyler Perry threw their heft as executive producers behind the film, which also stars Mo’Nique and Mariah Carey.

Since January, the film has been on an international festival tear: Berlin, Cannes and the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month where it won the People’s Choice award.

The Magnesses, Daniels and talented Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe who plays Claireece “Precious” Jones, will walk the red carpet on opening night. Festivities begin Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House at the Denver Performing Arts Complex. Tickets for the award-winning film and opening night celebration go on sale to Denver Film Society members Oct. 28 and Oct. 30 for the general public.
