COLORADO SPRINGS — Cullen Bryant, a former University of Colorado star who played running back in the NFL and who was a member of the inaugural class of the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame in 2000, died Tuesday in his Colorado Springs home, according to his sister-in-law Wanda E. Bryant.

She said she believed Bryant died of natural causes. He was 58.

Bryant was a consensus All-America defensive back at CU in 1972 for coach Eddie Crowder and played 11 seasons with the Los Angeles Rams and two with the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL. He was picked in the second round (31st overall) of the 1973 draft by the Rams.

Bryant is survived by two sons and a daughter.

“He was a loving father and loved his kids and spent as much time with them as he could,” his sister-in-law said.

Bryant was a 6-foot-1, 234-pound running back. In the NFL he ran 849 times for 3,264 yards and 20 touchdowns and caught 148 passes for 1,176 yards and three touchdowns. He was with the Rams from 1973-82 and again in 1987 and played for the Seahawks from 1983-84.

Bryant played football and basketball at Mitchell High School in Colorado Springs.

He was born in Fort Sill, Okla., on May 20, 1951.
