NEW ORLEANS — President Barack Obama, appearing at a town-hall meeting in New Orleans on Thursday, repeatedly diverted from his prepared remarks to offer sharp-edged warnings aimed at political adversaries in Washington who oppose his health care efforts.

“You know, I wasn’t kidding about it being hard. But you notice, I don’t quit,” he said as he pledged to pass health care reform this year, to thundering applause. “Those folks who are trying to stand in the way of progress, let me tell you: I’m just getting started.”

He also said his health care reform plan will help protect seniors and others from rising health care costs — so that over the long term those costs won’t be rising more quickly than Social Security. The Associated Press
