FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A friend of Richard Heene (HEE-nee), the Colorado father at the center of a runaway balloon investigation, says Heene grew evasive when he asked him if the saga was a hoax.
Dean Askew says he picked up Heene from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Department two days after the balloon incident last week. He says he asked Heene if it was a hoax and that Heene refused to answer.
Sheriff Jim Alderden says Heene and his wife, Mayumi, are under investigation for falsely reporting that their son was aboard the runaway balloon in a stunt to generate publicity for a proposed reality TV show. Criminal charges could be filed next week. The couple denies wrongdoing.
