DENVER—The Colorado Division of Wildlife says cold temperatures and lower water levels killed hundreds of small fish in Cherry Creek near downtown Denver.
Division spokeswoman Jennifer Churchill said Tuesday that the deaths were naturally occurring.
She says the fish that died were young gizzard shard, which are extremely susceptible to cooler temperatures. She says cooler temperatures associated with an approaching winter storm, plus lower waters in Cherry Creek, caused the young fish to die.
Denver Environmental Health Department spokeswoman Meghan Hughes estimated the number of dead fish at “between the upper hundreds to a few thousand.”
