Two home fires struck families in the metro area Sunday, bringing words of caution about fireplace safety from authorities.
One blaze in the 16000 block of Oxford Drive in Aurora began around 3 a.m., rendering that home unlivable and displacing a family of six. The cause is unknown, and the family’s name was not released.
Whenever Coloradans fire up heaters and hearths against colder weather, the Mile High American Red Cross assists more families struck by home fires, said volunteer Chip Frye.
A less-severe fire in the 5300 block of South Cody Street in Littleton was caused by a homeowner who stored ashes in a cardboard box in the garage, said West Metro Fire spokeswoman Micki Trost.
Trost said she has also seen fires started by chimneys cluttered with debris. Jessica Fender, The Denver Post
