Within two weeks, AirTran Airways will begin using seatbacks to tout a chance to win a Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas deluxe cruise.

The 2 1/2-by-9-inch ads will be visible when tray tables are in their upright position. Passengers will be exposed to the ads for about 40 minutes during enplaning, taxiing, takeoff, landing and deplaning to several hours depending on the flight’s length.

An AirTran statement said the ads will be presented in “a tasteful, unobtrusive way that we believe customers will enjoy.” AirTran, which flies out of Denver, said Wednesday it hopes the ads will increase ancillary revenues.

Cabin advertising has been seen for several years on seatback TVs, napkins and seat pockets and in in-flight magazines. AirTran is the first U.S. airline to use this type of display. Ann Schrader, The Denver Post; AP photo
