A 5-month investigation by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation netted identity theft charges against a South Carolina woman, the Denver District Attorney’s office said today.
Shonya Young, 28, already is in federal custody awaiting sentencing for her part in an identity theft ring in the Washington D.C. area. Her victims included the wife of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, who had her identity stolen after her purse was stolen in a coffee shop last year.
According to the newer charges, Young is accused of stealing about $13,000 from accounts at Colorado banks after allegedly stealing the purse of a South Dakota woman in Minneapolis in 2007, prosecutors said.
She is charged in Denver with multiple felony counts of theft, forgery and identity theft.
