Denver metro area residents can expect slick streets with temperatures staying below freezing and more snow over the next two days.

Snow was tapering off Sunday afternoon after leaving up to 8 inches in parts of the metro area. Overnight temperatures could top out at about 8 degrees.

The National Weather Service predicted a 20 percent chance of snow on Monday, rising to 50 percent in the evening. Temperatures are expected to hover in the low 20s.

Up to three inches of snow is likely on Tuesday and temperatures are expected to remain below 20 degrees.

Highways and streets were icy in spots on Sunday, said Stacey Stegman, for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Driving conditions resulted in a number of accidents, said Colorado State Patrol Trooper Ryan Sullivan.

“There are quite a few property damage crashes, cars going into the guard rail, spin-offs, slide-offs, most going too fast for conditions and losing control,” he said.

The weather service expects snow to clear out by Wednesday, though skies will stay partly cloudy through the rest of the week. It could be Thursday before the temperature climbs above freezing.

Heavy snow is expected in the high country and a major winter storm could drop up to 2 feet on Monday and Tuesday.
