MONTROSE, Colo.—The Montrose Daily Press has hired Billie Stanton as its new managing editor.

Stanton previously was the opinion editor for the Tucson Citizen, which published its last print edition in May.

Montrose Daily Press Publisher Stephen Woody announced Thursday that Stanton has begun her duties directing daily news operations.

Stanton, who speaks Spanish, also has been a Sunday editor, regional editor and editorial board member for The Denver Post and has held news leadership positions at The Gazette in Colorado Springs and with The Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville.

The Montrose newspaper says Stanton is the first woman to lead its news department in its 127-year history.
