A toddler who was pinned under a car after running from his grandmother in an Evergreen Walmart parking lot remains in critical condition today.

A volunteer firefighter and five others lifted the car off three-year-old Joshua Johnson in the parking lot at 952 Swede Gulch Road, Saturday, said Colorado State Patrol Trooper David Hall.

Scott Martin, a firefighter with the Evergreen Fire Department, resuscitated the boy, who had stopped breathing after the accident Saturday.

Hall didn’t identify the boy’s grandmother. “She was holding his hand and walked out of Walmart. He pulled away and bent to pick something up and a car pulls into the parking spot and doesn’t see the kid,” Hall said of the accident that occured around 1:16 p.m.

No charges will be filed, Hall said.

Debra Debruyne, 58, was driving the 1996 Toyota Corolla. “This is just an unfortunate incident. We don’t have an expectation that the driver should have seen the kid, she actually didn’t even see him,” Hall said.

The boy was dragged about 10 feet.

Johnson was airlifted to Children’s Hospital where he remains in the intensive care unit. Johnson’s family has declined media requests for interviews, said Children’s spokeswoman Natalie Goldstein.
