DENVER—The school lunch menu of southern-style chicken, collard greens and a biscuit was meant to honor Martin Luther King but instead one parent complained, calling it “stereotypical and offensive.”
Denver Public School officials replaced Friday’s planned meal at its 152 schools with a meal determined by each schools’ cafeteria manager and issued an apology. District spokesman Michael Vaughn in a statement said the meal was well intentioned but “highly insensitive in light of certain hurtful cultural sterotypes still harbored in parts of our society.”
Vern Howard, one of the organizers of Monday’s MLK parade in Denver, says the meal wasn’t inappropriate but it seemed to reduce King’s ideals of equality to fried chicken and collared greens.
