Hooray 2010! The Standard & Poor’s 500 index started the year with six straight days of gains.

It’s the only time that has ever happened outside of 1987, when the index started with seven straight days in the green.

Such a strong beginning, though, doesn’t necessarily portend great things.

It looked as if 1987 would be a strong year for stocks through its first nine months, rising as much as 39 percent from the end of 1986.

But progress halted when Oct. 19 hit, a day better known as “Black Monday.” The index dropped 20.5 percent in one day, and the year ended up in the red.
