The Ghana unit of Newmont Mining was fined $4.9 million by the West African nation after a cyanide spillage last year, the Ghana News Agency reported Tuesday.
The Accra-based, state-run agency cited “official documents,” without saying how they were obtained.
Greenwood Village-based Newmont said it “has stated its intention to meet its compensation obligations,” according to a statement.
