WASHINGTON — Don’t expect any partying at the White House today. Press secretary Robert Gibbs says no special ceremonies or events are being planned to take note of Barack Obama’s first year as president.

Obama took the oath of office on the steps of the Capitol around noon Jan. 20, 2009.

Gibbs acknowledged today is an “anniversary of types” but says the staff isn’t focused on marking the first year.

Obama’s anniversary arrives one day after a special election for the Massachusetts U.S. Senate seat long held by Democrat Edward Kennedy, who advocated health care for all. Republicans claimed the seat, threatening to derail efforts by the late Kennedy and Obama to overhaul the health care system to try to cut costs and cover more people. The Associated Press
