One person was killed and two people were injured early Saturday morning when a pickup stalled on westbound U.S. 6 was struck from behind by an SUV, authorities say.

Irvin Rodriquez, 63, of Denver, who was driving a Mercury Mountaineer SUV when it slammed into the stalled pickup, was pronounced dead at the scene just west of Garrison Street in Lakewood.

Two people who were in the stalled pickup were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Chevrolet Silverado pickup stopped in the left lane of westbound 6th Avenue at 7:25 a.m., according to Lakewood police. The driver of the stalled pickup called police for help.

Debris from the collision flew into the eastbound lanes of U.S. 6 and struck a bus, according to a witness. The debris caused minor damage, Lakewood police spokeswoman Andrea Joo said.

When people in two cars tried to avoid flying debris, the two cars struck one other, causing minor damage.
