FORT WORTH — Texas Christian University and officials of Kappa Sigma Fraternity are investigating an incident in which a student suffered second- and third-degree burns after being branded on his buttocks during a Colorado ski trip.

The student, Amon G. “Chance” Carter IV, the great-grandson of Amon G. Carter Sr., a Fort Worth civic leader and founder of the Star-Telegram, will have to undergo plastic surgery to repair the damage.

Carter, 20, is a sophomore at TCU. The school issued a statement Wednesday afternoon saying it has begun an investigation.

Breckenridge police told The Denver Post talked with Carter on Friday by telephone, but he did not give the investigator the name, or names, of the people who branded him, police spokeswoman Kim Green said.

“It doesn’t appear any (criminal) charges are going to be brought forth,” Green said. “It looks like the family may do something civilly.”

Still, the case remains open at this point, Green said.

“Until we have more information, and information from the victim, we’re just waiting whether to pursue this further,” Green said.

Denver Post staff writer Kieran Nicholson contributed to this report.
