A Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy shot an allegedly drunken driver after he crashed into another deputy and tried to run him over during a traffic stop late last night.
The injured deputy and the assault suspect were rushed to separate hospitals following the 10:58 p.m. incident, said Lt. Attila Denes, spokesman for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
Reese Slade, 43, of Elizabeth, was conscious when he was taken to a Denver area hospital for treatment. His condition was not available.
The deputy received an unspecified leg injury. He was treated and released.
“It definitely was pretty extreme,” Denes said.
Witnesses called 911 and reported an erratic driver who was weaving down Interstate 25 near Happy Canyon Road around 11 p.m., Denes said.
Deputies in two separate vehicles spotted the Subaru Outback shortly afterward going west on Wolfensberger Road in Castle Rock and gave chase, he said. The suspect turned north onto Caprice Court and stopped about two blocks later at a dead end in an industrial area behind a diesel mechanic shop, he said.
A deputy got out of his car and was approaching the suspect’s car from behind when the suspect put the Subaru in reverse and rammed into him, Denes said.
The suspect then changed gears and sped forward toward a second deputy, he said. The deputy fired at least one shot and struck the suspect. Denes said he does not know how many shots struck the suspect.
The case is under investigation by the Castle Rock Police Department.
