BEIJING — China recalled more than 170 tons of milk powder after authorities found that some batches of tainted dairy products ordered to be destroyed in 2008 had instead been redistributed.
Ningxia Tiantian Dairy was shut after a police investigation found it had repackaged and sold more than 164 tons of milk powder tainted with the chemical melamine, the China Daily newspaper reported. About 170 tons of tainted milk powder that should have been destroyed in 2008 was given to Tiantian by an unidentified company as payment for debt, the newspaper said Monday.
The recall undermines China’s efforts to restore confidence in its dairy industry after melamine-tainted formula killed at least six babies and sickened about 300,000 children in 2008.
