Denver is expected to pick up about 3 inches of snow and other areas of Front Range and Eastern Plains could see as much as 6 inches by Friday morning, the National Weather Service office in Boulder said this afternoon.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for much of the Eastern Plains and Western Slope until 5 a.m. Friday, meaning travelers should use extra caution on snow-packed roads as they head north and east of the metro region.

The metro area has an 80 percent chance of snow overnight as temperatures dip into the teens.

The region has a 10 percent chance of snow before 11 a.m. Friday ,as temperatures warm into the upper 30s, forecasters said.

Friday night has a 20 percent chance of snow in Denver and a 40 percent to 60 percent chance as the day progresses Saturday, when temperatures in the metro region are expected to peak at about 35, according to the Weather Service.

Snow chances diminish in the city on Sunday, though the temperatures are expected to remain in the lower 30s before they warm into the 40s on Monday through next week, according to the forecast.

The central and northern mountains could have 6 to 10 inches of fresh snow to greet weekend skiers, according to the High Country forecast.

Snow chances are better than 70 percent from Aspen to Steamboat Springs through Sunday night, with temperatures remaining at or below freezing as two Pacific storms roll across the region in the next few days, forecasters said this afternoon.
