The Denver Post photo and design teams have picked up several important awards in two recent journalism competitions.

The Society for News Design awarded The Post 21 awards, including a gold medal for photographer Craig Walker’s “American Soldier” project, and a silver medal for lead designer Jeff Neumann’s print presentation of the project. Walker also picked up two awards of excellence for individual photos from the project.

The 21 awards were the 11th most by any newspaper in the international competition and the seventh most by a U.S. paper. The gold medal was one of only five awarded in SND’s 31st annual Creative Competition that drew 10,158 entries. The only other U.S. paper to win gold was The New York Times.

Of The Post’s 21 SND awards, 15 were in photography categories. Design winners included coverage leading up to the presidential inauguration and the inauguration itself, a special section that profiled then-president-elect Barack Obama and a report marking the 10-year anniversary of Columbine.

The Post’s special photographic report titled “Below the line: Childhood poverty in Colorado” won awards for photo page design and photo report in addition to two awards of excellence for individual photos from the project.

In Pictures of the Year International judging, The Post’s special report on president-elect Obama received a first place award for feature story photo editing. “American Soldier” also won a first place award for photo editing of a series or special section, a category in which The Post also won second place for Post preps editing.

Other Post awards included Walker winning third place in newspaper photographer of the year competition, a second place for issue reporting, a second place for newspaper portfolio editing, a third place for best use of photos by a newspaper, an award of excellence for general news reporting, and an award of excellence for editing of issue reporting.
