In the plains of southeastern Colorado sits a small farming community many probably have never heard about. The town of Kim, 20 miles from the New Mexico border, has a population of about 75 people. Needless to say, its high school is small too.

Even with just 26 students enrolled — about half of them girls — Kim finds a way to put together a competitive girls basketball team every season. This year’s team consisted of 13 girls, three of whom made a 42-mile drive six days a week during the season for practices and games.

“The level of commitment all these kids have shown is amazing,” Mustangs coach Curt Lewis said. “They’ve bought into everything we’re trying to do.”

They grow their crops and girls big in Kim. This year’s team had four girls who are at least 6 feet tall. There was only one other girl that tall from the other seven teams in the Class 1A state tournament combined.
