PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Mets shortstop Jose Reyes has been cleared to resume baseball activities after doctors determined his thyroid levels have returned to normal.

Reyes was diagnosed in early March with a hyperactive thyroid, and doctors prescribed rest and a change in diet. He was told to refrain from physical activity and was monitored and tested weekly in New York.

After missing most of last season with a hamstring injury, Reyes was pulled from stretching before what would have been his spring training debut March 5 when team doctors decided the abnormal results from his physical warranted further testing. He is expected to return to Mets camp today.

“It’s a good sign for us today, and hopefully it will be a good sign for the rest of the year,” Mets general manager Omar Minaya said Tuesday. “Today is a good day.”

Lee feels pain in abdomen

PEORIA, Ariz. — Mariners left-hander Cliff Lee, the 2008 AL Cy Young Award winner, said he still feels some pain in his strained abdomen following his first on-field test of the injury and he has no idea when he will be able to get on a mound again.

That makes it possible Lee won’t be ready when the season starts April 5 at Oakland.

Lee and manager Don Wakamatsu both said Lee’s brief, light, morning throwing session on flat ground went well, and Lee said the muscle feels much better. But he added, “I still feel it.”

Buchholz, Pedroia hit hard

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz and second baseman Dustin Pedroia both got roughed up in Boston’s 7-2 loss to the Twins.

Pedroia strained his left wrist in the first inning while diving for a ball hit by Denard Span. The 2008 AL MVP was charged with a throwing error on the same play and finished the inning but did not return.

“We’re going to get him X-rayed in the morning, just because we should,” manager Terry Francona said. “Their doctor came over. I don’t think there’s a problem. He might be a little sore (today). Hopefully that’s all it is.”

Buchholz threw three wild pitches, hit a batter, walked three and gave up six runs, five earned, as his spring ERA ballooned to 10.80.

Footnotes.

Former slugger Jose Canseco said he has been subpoenaed by a grand jury investigating whether seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens lied to Congress when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs.

• Padres right-hander Jon Garland, who hasn’t pitched in a game since March 16 because of what manager Bud Black calls a “cranky shoulder,” threw 30 pitches in a bullpen session and is set to start in an exhibition game Friday.

• Angels right-hander Ervin Santana was scratched from his spring start with elbow inflammation, though a team spokesman said Santana is expected to be ready for the start of the season.

• Oakland left-hander Brett Anderson said he felt “really good” after pitching five simulated innings against minor- leaguers a day after a stiff neck forced him to miss his start.
