Kicking off the night with “Scorpio,” Seattle duo played a subdued but talkative set to a packed house at the Walnut Room on Tuesday. The group, which has released two solid records on Hardly Art, told stories along with their songs — including an admission that they spent two-three days driving back from Texas smoking way too many cigarettes.
During “Strangers,” the duo couldn’t stop coughing throughout the song. And later they told a story about how one of the song’s lyrics is constantly misinterpreted. Whereas many people think the lyric — “You fucked me in the phone booth/You know you took me by surprise” — is about sex, it’s actually about a conversation Lortz had with his father at a payphone, he said to applause and laughter from the crowd.
