WASHINGTON — Judges play only a limited role in reviewing the fees charged by mutual-fund advisers, the Supreme Court ruled Tuesday, insulating the industry from some investor suits even while reviving one against Harris Associates.

Ruling unanimously on the federal law that governs the fund industry’s $11 trillion in assets, the court said investors can win lawsuits only when the fee charged by a fund “bears no reasonable relationship to the services rendered.”
