PUEBLO, Colo.—The Army has scheduled a second public meeting on a plan to destroy thousands of chemical weapons at the Pueblo Chemical Depot by blowing them up in closed chambers.

The meeting will be April 27 in Pueblo.

About 780,000 shells containing mustard agent are awaiting destruction at the depot. The Army originally planned to destroy 500 to 1,000 with explosives and to neutralize the rest with water and bacteria.

Last year, the Army said it wanted to destroy up to 125,000 shells with explosives to speed up the process. A draft environmental assessment predicted no significant impacts, but some Pueblo groups and individuals have raised safety concerns.

The public comment period on the environmental assessment has been extended by three days, to April 30.
