DENVER—A law aimed at discouraging illegal immigrants from driving has snared a Parker man who lent a friend a motorcycle.

The Denver City Council will vote Monday on whether to pay Kevin Ehrich $11,843 in attorney’s fees and damages after Ehrich’s motorcycle sat in the city’s impound lot for more than year.

Police seized Ehrich’s motorcycle after police stopped a friend who borrowed it without a valid motorcycle license. Unable to pay the $2,500 fee and with $20 a day storage fees mounting, Ehrich filed a lawsuit.

In ruling in favor of Ehrich, Denver District Court Judge Catherine Lemon says those whose property is seized through the actions of others under voter-approved Initiative 100 have a right to try to prove they’re innocent.
