A large fight involving two gangs was quelled within minutes on Wednesday at the Larimer County Detention Center, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office said today.
At least three members of one gang and two members from another gang face charges, said Eloise Campanella, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s department.
In addition, an inmate with no known gang affiliation and a member of a third gang also face charges, she said.
During the altercation, no deputies were injured but some of the inmates received minor cuts, scrapes and bruises.
Campanella said that five of the inmates involved were moved to a high security area of the detention center. Due to overcrowding of the security area, the two other inmates were moved to other areas of the detention center and placed under increased security.
At the time of Wednesday’s fight, there were a total of 499 inmates in the facility, of which 59 were identified as gang members.
Campanella said a second fight broke out about 9:15 p.m. Thursday between two inmates. The fight was quickly ended when Tasers where shown to the inmates by responding deputies.
Campanella said that unlike the earlier incident, it is not known if the second incident was gang-related.
Early today, Campanella said a third fight, this time gang-related, broke out between two inmates. One of the inmates was injured.
Campanella said the majority of gang members at the facility are members of California-based Hispanic gangs, although a few inmates are linked to white supremacists.
