Feel free to accelerate your gas pedal a little more while you’re driving along portions of Interstate 76 in Adams County — the state won’t stop you from doing so.
The Colorado Department of Transportation, or CDOT, is raising the speed limit from 55 mph to 65 mph along I-76 from 74th Avenue to Interstate 70. The increased speed limit was deemed safe and necessary following a traffic engineering analysis conducted in December.
“When this portion of I-76 was originally constructed, the speed limit was set to 55 miles per hour in compliance with the national maximum speed limit,” said CDOT traffic engineer Steve Hersey. “The recent speed data collected in the field along with a review of the accident history now suggests a 65 mile per hour speed limit is more consistent with driver behavior and is likely to increase compliance and improve safety.”
The goal is to set the appropriate speed limit so the maximum number of vehicles travel at about the same speed, thus reducing conflicts caused by extreme speed differentials, according to CDOT.
