An unidentified female passenger on an off-road motorcycle was killed Saturday after a northbound Ford Explorer veered off North Shields Street onto the shoulder and struck a motorcycle, the State Patrol reported.

The accident occurred just north of Highway 287 and Fort Collins at about 3:35 p.m.

The unidentified male driver of the 1999 Honda 80 R dirtbike sustained “moderate” injuries and was taken to Poudre Valley Hospital, Trooper Nate Reid said. His passenger died at the hospital. Both victims were from Fort Collins.

The SUV fled the accident, Reid said, but the suspected driver, 60-year-old Stephen Johnson of Windsor, was intercepted by Larimer County deputies after he ran his SUV into a ditch about a mile from the accident scene near Terry Lake, Reid said.

Johnson then allegedly took off on foot across a field before officers caught him, Reid said. Alcohol use by Johnson is a suspected factor in the incident, Reid said.
