MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Gov. Charlie Crist, in his first Senate campaign event since unshackling himself from the Republican Party, defended his appearance with President Barack Obama, his veto of an education bill that was a GOP priority and his decision to run as an independent.
His fundraiser at a Miami Beach hotel was attended by more than 100 Republicans, Democrats and independents.
Upbeat and more relaxed than he had seemed in months, Crist stated that he is no longer a Republican.
He said he appeared with Obama because it was the respectful thing to do. “When some in my former party criticized that, I thought, ‘Something’s wrong,’ ” he said.
