KATMANDU, Nepal — Tens of thousands of Maoist protesters in Nepal began an indefinite nationwide strike Sunday, paralyzing much of the country and demanding the resignation of the prime minister.

The demonstrations are occurring as leaders of Nepal’s largest political parties, including the Maoists, remain stalemated in negotiations over writing a new constitution. Once a monarchy, Nepal is now a fragile democracy facing a May 28 deadline to draft a constitution.
