Earl Ryan was sentenced to 28 years in prison today as a result of his guilty plea to shooting the 2-year-old son of the woman he was romantically involved with in October 2008.

Ryan, 41, pleaded guilty in March at the outset of his first-degree murder trial in the death of Noah Crookham, which could have resulted in life in prison. Denver District Court Judge Brian Whitney imposed the maximum penalty under his plea, according to the Denver District Attorney’s office.

Ryan pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in death and second-degree assault on the child’s father, who was shot through the hand. He also must pay $16,146.23 in restitution to a victim compensation fund.
