A Logan County judge deemed Sterling rancher Gilbert Dean Schuman, 57, of Schuman Cattle LLC an “unfit owner” last week and confiscated 28 starving cattle from his property.

The court also ordered Schuman not to own any cattle until further notice, according to a written statement from the Colorado Department of Agriculture.

Testimony from a state Agriculture Department veterinarian called the neglect the “worst case of malnutrition in a dairy animal I have seen.”

In March, police charged Schuman with 16 counts of animal cruelty when they discovered 79 decomposing cattle carcasses on his property, some of them frozen into livestock ponds, hidden in outbuildings or buried under piles of hay. Charges are still pending.
