AURORA, Colo.—The Aurora City Council has agreed to keep negotiating with police and firefighters over a proposed 5 percent pay cut to help the city mitigate an $8 million budget shortfall.
More than 300 police and firefighters and their families attended a Council meeting Monday to oppose the idea.
Councilman Bob FitzGerald said the city wants to cut $4 million from public safety. The Aurora Police Association, meanwhile, has asked for a .75 percent wage increase to recoup losses from two mandatory furlough days this year.
The matter appeared headed for arbitration, but the sides agreed Monday to keep talking.
The city has about 900 police and fire employees.
