A man was shot in the chest early this morning after an argument outside of a northeast Denver nightclub, police said.
The victim was taken to Denver Health Medical Center in critical condition, said Sonny Jackson, a Denver Police Department spokesman.
The shooting, which could be gang related, happened at about 2:10 a.m. a short distance from the Roxy Lounge, 2549 Welton St., Jackson said. It was about 40 minutes after the bar closed.
A group of about 30 people, mostly men, were arguing in the street when a light-colored car drove by and shots were fired, Jackson said.
Joe Richards, one of the Roxy’s owners, said the shooting was not related to the nightclub or anything that happened inside before closing.
“That was the crowd we wouldn’t let in,” Richards said of the men in the street. “Our nightclub doesn’t have problems.”
Richards said the nightclub employs off-duty police and security officers and is careful not to admit anyone looking for trouble.
The shots may have been fired from the car, Jackson said, and the police department’s gang unit is investigating the case.
