Those curious about Colorado’s growing sport of river surfing will want to stop at Glenwood Springs on Memorial Day (Monday) for the second annual Whitewater Stand Up Paddling Championship.

The SUP competition begins with a race down the Colorado River from Two Rivers Park in Glenwood Springs to South Canyon, followed by a new “SUPcross” event and an afternoon surfing contest on the standing wave at the Glenwood Springs Whitewater Park in West Glenwood. Surfers from as far as Hawaii and the West Coast are registered to compete alongside Colorado locals.

Portions of last year’s inaugural event are also featured in the video “RiverSUP” produced by Aspen-based Enviro Action Productions and available for purchase ($27) through the event website.
