GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Prosecutors have filed charges including second-degree murder against a Fruita man whose roommate was shot and killed.
Thirty-seven-year-old Wayne Gert also was charged Friday with menacing and prohibited use of a weapon, alleging he was intoxicated when 37-year-old Henry Trisler Jr. was shot May 21. Gert also is charged with possessing an explosive or incendiary device and explosives parts.
An arrest affidavit says Gert told officers he shot in self-defense. Gert’s father told police his son was being treated for schizophrenia through a Veterans Affairs hospital.
The U.S. Army says Gert worked with multiple rocket-launch systems during his service between March 1992 and September 1997.
He is being held in lieu of a $500,000 bond.
