Before his death in January, Charlie Meyers collaborated with Kirk Deeter on a collection of fly-fishing vignettes designed to teach and inspire. “The Little Red Book of Fly Fishing” was published in May ($16.95, Skyhorse Publishing), and many of the more than 200 tips can cause anyone to daydream, putting the words from the page into practice. The authors spent nearly three yearsthe last part while Meyers was going through various treatments for cancer — putting their years of knowledge and experiences into the pieces.
Taking the simple approach, the book is a guide for the novice to the well-schooled fisherman who might be looking for a perspective on the basics of fly-fishing.
“Charlie was ‘get to the point’ with everything, and that’s how he wrote it. He made his mark by being clear and making things accessible for everyone,” Deeter said. “You can really hear his voice. The Dream Stream was the last place I fished with Charlie, in September 2008. He was sick, but marched up and down the stream, and brought fried chicken for lunch, as he always did.”
