PUEBLO, Colo.—A former commander of the Pueblo Chemical Depot has been named director of stockpile operations for the Army agency that oversees storage of the nation’s chemical weapons.

The Chemical Materials Agency announced the appointment of Col. John J. Megnia (MEG’-nee-uh) on Monday. The agency is based at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.

Megnia will oversee stockpile operations and direct commanders at chemical weapons sites.

The Chemical Materials Agency oversees the storage and destruction of chemical weapons in Alabama, Arkansas, Oregon and Utah. It also oversees storage of weapons in Colorado and Kentucky, but destruction operations there are supervised by another agency.

The U.S. other nations agreed to destroy their chemical weapons under a 1997 treaty.
