On the heels of eight locals being picked in the first 30 rounds of the 2010 MLB draft, nine more were selected on the third and final day of the event.

Steve Dennison a left-hander out of Wheaton (Ill.) College, went in the 34th round to the Marlins at No. 1,037 overall. The Regis Jesuit grad was 7-3 this season with a 5.78 ERA in a team-high 71 2/3 innings pitched. He struck out 59 and walked 32.

Pine Creek’s John Pustay was a 37th-round selection of the Rangers. The center fielder hit .615 this season with 11 home runs and 38 RBI. Pustay has committed to San Diego State.

Jeff Nadeau, a left-handed pitcher from LSU-Shreveport, was taken by St. Louis in the 38th round at No. 1,159 overall. The Wheat Ridge grad, a junior, made eight starts this season, going 5-0 with a 3.48 ERA with 34 strikeouts against 23 walks.

In the 40th round (No. 1,224 overall), the Angels nabbed Dixie State (Utah) catcher Andrew Oldfield. In 47 games this season, the Rangeview grad hit .312 with 12 home runs and 49 RBIs.

Durango High graduate Sam Phippen — a 6-foot-9 reliever for UC Santa Barbara who is believed to be the only Division I athlete to play both baseball and basketball — went to the White Sox in the 41st round. Phippen appeared in seven games this season, going 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA. He struck out six and walked six.

Cherry Creek senior Ben Mordini went later in the 41st round, to the Rockies at No. 1,250 overall. In 85 innings this season, Mordini was 6-1 with a 3.55 ERA. He had 80 strikeouts against 43 walks. He has committed to Utah.

Rocky Mountain’s Chris Roglen was a Rangers selection in the 43rd round. The right fielder, who has committed to Santa Barbara City College, hit .365 this season with two home runs and 22 RBIs.

Mitch Horacek, a left-hander from ThunderRidge, was picked by Colorado in the 46th round (No. 1,400 overall). In 49 innings pitched this season, he was 4-4 and had a 2.40 ERA. The Dartmouth commit had four complete games, including three shutouts, and struck out 91 batters against 22 walks.

Kyle Ottoson, a left-handed pitcher at South Mountain (Ariz.) Community College, and a graduate of Eaton High, was picked by the Phillies in the 48th round (No. 1,461 overall). In 13 games, including 11 starts, he was 5-3 with one save, a 1.89 ERA, and 97 strikeouts against 21 walks.
