The pilot of an experimental aircraft died Wednesday when the plane crashed in Weld County.
The crash, northeast of Fort Lupton, happened about noon, said Undersheriff Margie Martinez of the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.
Witnesses told investigators an experimental aircraft was doing aerobatic maneuvers when its wings collapsed and the plane spiraled to the ground, Martinez said.
The aircraft was a kit plane manufactured in 2000 and certified for flight in 2008. Federal Aviation Administration records for the aircraft indicated the registered owner is a man from Brighton.
Investigators said the owner is a man in his 60s. He had not been identified.
The crash site is about 2 miles from the Platte Valley Airpark.
