HAYDEN, Colo.—Hayden town officials are drafting an ordinance to prohibit medical marijuana dispensaries.

The Town Council will consider the ordinance July 15. The council voted unanimously in May against amending the land-use code to allow a dispensary in the town’s historic downtown district.

The council decided Thursday against asking voters in the northwest Colorado community to say whether they want medical marijuana dispensaries in town.

Colorado voters in 2000 approved the use of marijuana for medical purposes. Hundreds of dispensaries have opened across the state and communities have moved to ban the operations or approved moratoriums to give them time to write regulations.

A new state law imposes regulations on the industry and allows cities and towns to ban dispensaries.
