Amateur and aspiring stand-up paddlers are invited to the Salida Whitewater Park on the Arkansas River on Sunday for a fun SUP race and surf session organized by Colorado Kayak Supply.
The event features a 2.5-mile downriver sprint race (individual time trial format) through the park beginning at 11 a.m., followed by a friendly paddle-surfing competition on the park’s best SUP wave at 2 p.m. Interested participants with their own life vest and helmet can rent demo boards and paddles at the nearby CKS shop in Buena Vista (reserve at 719-395-8653).
Both events feature men’s and women’s divisions, and prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and last-place finishers based on race times and surf scores judged on fluidity, style and innovation. Registration opens at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Recreation Engineering and Planning office at the upstream end of the whitewater park in downtown Salida.
