James Tompkins, 51, was sentenced Monday afternoon to 22 years in prison for setting fire to his ex-wife’s car while it was parked in the garage of her home in Windsor in January 2008.
His former wife was home at the time but was not hurt.
Tompkins repeatedly called his ex-wife throughout that day after the fire; he was arrested at a Fort Collins motel on charges of phone harassment.
Police found items in Tompkins’ car that had been taken from his ex-wife’s garage, prosecutors said.
Tompkins has a long arrest record, including a conviction for second-degree murder in El Paso County in 1983 and several arrests for domestic violence, which were factors in his long sentence, according to the Weld County Sheriff’s Department.
