More than 60 family members and friends gathered at the Crist Mortuary in Boulder on Wednesday to remember John R. “Jack” Schueller. The 84-year old World War II veteran died June 28 in his Broomfield apartment when prosecutors say he was shot by his stepson, Thomas Holloway.

Schueller served as a ball turret gunner on the B-24 bomber “Miss America 1944” during 24 missions over Germany in 1944 and 1945. He was highly decorated, and was accorded full military honors at his memorial service.

Thomas Holloway is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, after police say he went on a violent rampage in Boulder and Broomfield counties on June 28.

Thomas Holloway had been involuntary hospitalized for psychiatric reasons on June 25, after making suicidal remarks to family members, but was released later the same day for undisclosed reasons, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
